Director-general (DG) of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, has urged corps members to embrace the various skills acquisition programmes available in the camps to augment their certificates for self-reliance after service.
The DG who also enjoined the corps members to shun negative activities such as drug abuse, illegal travelling among others, promised the corps members that none of them would be posted to unsafe areas during the service.
Yushau stated this at the weekend during his familiarisation visit to the corps members serving at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

He expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the corps members since their call up for the orientation which was adjudged to be the best so far and assured them that NYSC will continue to prioritise the welfare of corps members.

“I assure you that wherever you will be posted for your primary assignment must be safe, and secured. Avoid unnecessary traveling and if you must travel, always obtain permission before doing so and don’t forget to move along with your identification card wherever you may go.

“I urge you to pay attention to all camp activities in camp, as they are designed to prepare you for life ahead, especially take your security tips lectures seriously and be law abiding. You should always dress properly in and out of uniforms, and don’t forget to carry your ID card, respect culture and traditions of the society you are posted to serve”, the DG admonished the corps members.

He also urged them to respect other people’s diverse opinions and views, saying that the essence of the NYSC is to promote unity in diversity, stressing that they should feel free to interact with the community.

“I also urge you to participate in entrepreneurship activities, as skills you acquire will help you to not only be self-reliant, but augment whatever you are getting as salary. Those you know that are working know that salary is not enough,” the DG said.

He presented a cash award to the NYSC Guard Command, the band, the cultural group that displayed fantastic Igbo cultural dance despite coming from different ethnic groups, and to other deserving corps members.
He promised to give three fat cows and 80 cartons of malt to the corps members for them to set out a day to celebrate their arrival in the camp, and ordered that his phone number be provided to the corps members to take selfies with the cows to ensure that the size he pronounced is presented to them.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Borno State coordinator of the NYSC, Alhaji Adamu Jiya said a total of 1,162 corps members were registered for the 2024 Batch A stream II orientation exercise, which comprises 622 males and 550 females.

He commended the corps members for displaying maturity and high level of discipline in the camp and urged them to continue in that direction, as they would be adjudged the best corps members.
