Katsina State government said it has over 90 reported cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
The state commissioner for women’s affairs, Zainab Musawa disclosed this at the first quarter maiden meeting of the steering committee on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Child Protection Implementation committee, held at the conference hall, Government House Katsina.

She lamented the prevalence rate in the state, which necessitated the call for urgent steps to address the challenges, stressing that the victims who are mostly youth often suffer from depression, neglect and psychological trauma and yet are underreported.

Musawa said, “From the dashboard of the state police command, between 10th of September, 2023 to date when we establish the gender-based violence in Katsina we have had about 90 cases in Katsina.

“The corporate age of offenders usually is above 55. The age group of victims is between 1 – 45 years old. We can see that the younger generation is usually the victims, and the offenders are usually the older generation.

“Of this figure, we can resolve 27 cases which is not up to 40 per cent. This is grossly inadequate, and for us to get to where we want to be, that concerted effort of coming together is paramount.

“We have 3 rape cases on record, 10 sexual assault, nine physical assault, eight force marriage, 11 denial of resources and 45 cases of psychological and emotional abuse.”
The wife of the state governor, Zailiyat Dikko Radda, emphasised the increasing rate of GBV in the state, and said she has zero tolerance for it and called on all stakeholders to put all hands on deck to address it.
