The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano State has made a significant leap in medical advancement by performing its first kidney and urology treatments using Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) technology.

The technology will enable doctors to treat kidney and urology issues using less invasive procedures.

The Lead Surgeon, Dr. Przemyslaw Zugaj, a urology doctor from Poland, expressed his excitement about the new technology, stating that it can be used to treat complicated cases such as kidney, bladder, and prostate issues more effectively.

Zugaj highlighted that unlike conventional methods that may require invasive procedures and longer hospital stays, LASER treatments enable patients to return home after two to three days, even in the presence of complications.

This achievement was made possible through a Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) grant of N4.5 billion for procuring state-of-the-art equipment for AKTH and six other hospitals in the North-West region.

In addition to providing funding for the equipment, TETFund organised intensive training for doctors from all seven hospitals on effectively operating the new technology-driven machines.

The training has equipped medical professionals with the skills needed to utilise the advanced equipment to its fullest potential.

A Bayero University Kano professor, Sani Aji emphasized on the numerous benefits of LASER surgery, pointing out that with it, patients no longer need extensive incisions or prolonged hospital stays.
