The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has arrested five persons for allegedly breaking official seals placed on illegal pharmaceutical outlets and continuing the operation of unauthorised drug premises in Kano State.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the PCN Director of Enforcement, Dr. Suleiman Chiroma, the arrests were carried out during an ongoing enforcement operation at the prohibited Dalan Gyada and Kurmi markets.

Chiroma said three of the suspects were arrested for breaking seals earlier placed on illegal pharmaceutical outlets, while two others were apprehended for allegedly operating illegal medicine shops within the affected markets.

He described the actions as serious violations of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2022, warning that the council would not tolerate breaches of pharmaceutical regulations.

“PCN will enforce all breaches of the law by any premises, whether legal or illegal, anywhere in Nigeria. Breaking official seals, reopening sealed premises, or operating pharmaceutical businesses without PCN approval are grave violations of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2022,” he stated.

The enforcement director said the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned before the Federal High Court for prosecution, adding that the council’s legal team has been mobilised to ensure a successful trial.

Chiroma reiterated that Dalan Gyada and Kurmi markets remain prohibited locations for the sale of medicines, warning members of the public against patronising drug vendors operating in such areas.

He urged residents to obtain medicines only from licensed and regulated facilities approved by the PCN, stressing the importance of safety, quality, and efficacy of drugs.

He added that the council would continue working with security agencies and stakeholders to eliminate illegal pharmaceutical activities and sanitise the drug distribution system nationwide.

Chiroma also called on operators in the pharmaceutical sector and the general public to cooperate with ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at safeguarding public health.
