The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Ifeanyi Ubah has condemned the failure of the Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo in conducting election into local government more than two years after assumption to power.

He lamented that the local government administration in the state had remained undemocratised for 18 years now, arguing that the current administration ought to have corrected the anomaly.

Ubah, a Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stated this while making contributions to a motion sponsored by Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman-Kawu (Kano South) which called on President Bola Tinubu to revive the local government system.

He said the prevailing insecurity, urban migration, decaying infrastructure and widespread unemployment being experienced nationwide are partly caused by non-democratisation of the local government system.

The federal lawmaker stated that the non-implementation of the 1999 constructional framework on local government system has become a major impediment to the independence of the nation’s third tier.

He said; “If we want to promote good governance in this country, we need to look at Section 7 of the 1999 constitutional framework so we can start having value for democracy in our respective states.

“A state like Anambra State has not conducted (local government) elections in the last 18 years. When you look at the decadence of governance, poor infrastructure, non-employment of youths and other economic problems, (it) is due to the non-implementation of the 1999 constitutional framework (as it relates to local government system)”, Ubah stated further.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Abdulrahman-Kawu, had earlier in his lead debate, raised concerns that some governors are frustrating local government autonomy in Nigeria through constitutional alteration processes.
