Plateau State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed readiness to join nation-wide strike if the contending issues on public universities are not addressed.
The union in a statement issued in Jos by its chairman, Dr Monday Hassan and secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, said members were well mobilised to support efforts that would make the federal and state governments take seriously, the responsibility of ensuring quality university education.
According to the statement, the union flayed the failure of government to sign and implement the Nimi Briggs renegotiated agreement.
The union said the failure to implement the N170 billion approved in 2023 for the revitalisation of public universities is another major issue, stressing that these actions compounded by the poor socio-economic realities had created brain drain.
“ Most of the highly esteemed intellectuals that should be on ground to mentor the upcoming scholars are leaving in search of better remuneration outside the country,” the union said.
They said members at the branch were calling on both federal and state governments to go beyond rhetoric and expressions of good intentions to take decisive actions to avert the looming strike action.
