The Yobe State governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni has restated the readiness of his administration towards additional funding to the Yobe State University (YSU) from both the state and local governments for the institution to meet the realities of the current economic challenges.

A statement issued by the director general Press Affairs and Media to the Governor, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed said Buni gave the assurance when the governing council of the university paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Damaturu.

The governor said his government is mindful of the economic challenges facing all sectors of society and institutions, of which the Yobe State University is not an exception.
He expressed the readiness of his administration towards providing the university with more resources to continue with the pursuance of academic excellence.

“The future of the state and our people rely on the university in producing the manpower needed for good governance and quality services delivery to the people of the state.”
Buni charged the governing council to reach out to agencies such as Tetfund and development partners to source for more funds.

“Other tertiary institutions are benefitting from these agencies. You should also take the advantage and scout for additional funds for the university,” he advised.
The governor further stated that the northeast states are working towards establishing a 10 megawatts solar powered electricity project to improve power supply in the region.

“We are also working for the North East Development Commission to consider another 10 megawatts solar power project to further improve power supply in the sub-region,” he added.

Gov. Buni expressed optimism that the two projects, when completed, would stabilise electricity supply in the Northeast region.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Governing council of the University, Barrister Ahmed Mustapha Goniri, appealed for more financial support to the institution as the funds allocated to them have become unrealistic with the current economic challenges and the increasing rate of inflation in the country.

Goniri said, “For the University to excel as a Centre of academic excellence, more funding is required,” the council chairman said.
