Bishop Philips Academy on Friday thrashed Zumuratal Hujaj Secondary School 6-0 to book a slot in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Oyo State Governor’s Cup football competition for secondary schools.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bashorun High School and Government College, Ibadan also booked their places in the state quarter-finals.

The coach of Bishop Phillips Academy, Bolarinwa Oduniyi, told NAN that he was impressed by the performance of his players.

Oduniyi said however that he would be working on their teamwork and pattern of play.
Abayomi Ilori, the coach of Zumuratal Hujaj Secondary School, on his part said in football a team was bound to lose, and it was unfortunate they lost.

Ilori said that he was not disappointed with his team and their performance. “They were very active, and they played well.

“My players’ communication was low compared to that of their opponents, and that’s one of the reasons we lost.

“In football, there must be good communication between players,” he added.

Yomi Elijah, the organiser of the competition, on his part said he was impressed with the level of skills exhibited so far in the competition.

Elijah said the competition was not just what the students needed, rather it was training which would then lead to competition.

“The students lack training facilities and well-trained coaches, as they also need training.

“In Saki, Ido, Ogbomosho, we saw students playing barefooted, and they played very well. Imagine if they had boots to play how their performances would have been?”

He added that the state possesses a lot of potential that the state government needed to look into developing holistically.
“The state government needs to develop sports in schools because they are the future of our sports,” he said.
NAN reports that the quarter-final matches are scheduled to hold on June 4 at Urban Day Grammar School, Old Ife Road, and Ikolaba Grammar School, Agodi.(NAN)
