A 45-year-old woman, simply identified as Abiodun, has set her 86-year-old mother ablaze in Ondo West local government area of Ondo State.

Abiodun, popularly called ‘Iya Sunday’, said she set her mother ablaze because she was allegedly behind her predicament.

A source told LEADERSHIP that the suspect set the victim, whose name is yet-to-be confirmed, ablaze after drenching her with petrol.

The old woman who sustained burns from head to toe was currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

An eyewitness, Sola Oladele, further explained that the suspect came to her mother’s house on Friday around 5am and called out her before pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire.

Oladele said, “What happened between them before the incident we don’t know, but the suspect has been arrested by the police at the Enu-Owa Division for further investigation.”

The suspect, Abiodun, who said she did it because she was told that her mother was behind her predicament, explained that, “I went to my mother’s house around 4 am and sat outside. When it was 5am, I called out my mother from the house. Immediately after she came out, not knowing what was happening, I poured petrol on her body and set her on fire.

“What started it is that I went to one pastor for prayer, and he told me that my mother was behind what was happening to me. I did not believe it at first. My mother also took me somewhere to see a woman. After my mother left, the woman also said the same thing.

“I burnt my mother because of what I heard from the pastor and the woman, that I can only be free from bondage when my mother is dead.”

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, however, informed that the victim died on Saturday.

Odunlami-Omisanya disclosed that since the woman died while receiving treatment in hospital, the suspect would be charged with murder.
