Usman, emphasises that the youths are the driving force behind any meaningful development, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our democracy serves the people.

He underscored youth-led organisations dedicated to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through partnerships with various NGOs, CSOs and other organisations. NYAN recognizes democracy as a cornerstone of governance that empowers the people.

He urged the National Assembly to uphold the principles of democracy by involving the people in important bills and matters. Public hearings are crucial in ensuring that the voices of the citizens are heard and reflected in the decision-making process.

He further stated,” to address these challenges, we propose: Economic stabilisation through industrialisation and agricultural development – Enhanced security nationwide Promoting the spirit of unity, diversity and harmony among Nigerians Stronger democratic institutions – Implementation of the minimum wage to ensure a living wage for all workers”

During a press conference to mark the Democracy Day in Abuja, on the theme: “Unlocking the Power of Youth: Leveraging Nigeria’s Demographic Dividend for National Progress” he highlighted that Democracy is about the people, and we, the youth, understand that we have no other country but Nigeria.

He said, the journey of democracy in Nigeria has been marked by notable achievements over the last quarter-century. Economic stabilisation efforts, including initiatives to boost industrialisation and promote the agricultural sector, have yielded positive outcomes, driving economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and improving livelihoods for countless Nigerians.

“Over the last 25 years, our democracy has achieved some notable milestones, including- Consolidation of democratic institutions Expansion of political participation Improvement in human rights and the rule of law.”

“However, alongside these achievements, NYAN acknowledges the existing non-achievements of democracy, including persistent challenges such as the issue of minimum wage. Addressing such socio-economic disparities remains imperative to fostering inclusive growth and ensuring the well-being of all Nigerians.”

Moreover, significant strides have been made in enhancing national security, although challenges persist. Through collaborative efforts between government agencies, security forces, and communities, tangible progress has been achieved in safeguarding the lives and properties of all citizens.

NYAN reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria. As a youth-led organisation, we recognise the pivotal role of young people in driving positive change and sustainable development. Through advocacy, innovation, and community engagement, NYAN remains dedicated to contributing to the realisation of the SDGs, thereby building a brighter future for all Nigerians.

On this day, NYAN calls upon fellow youth, government institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector to unite in our collective pursuit of a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Nigeria.
