What It Entails

Nail technique in which manicuring is embedded, involves styling and shaping a person’s nails and this is achieved using a combination of decorating nails with coloured varnish, transfers, gems or glitter. For women that love to be stylish and glow in parties, the services of a nail tech (technician for short) is patronised week in week out

Relevance

According to Damilola Oseyemi of Damsellnails Studio, nail technicians are becoming more in demand since there are designs and different ways of adorning the nails. The job is becoming more lucrative.

Training & Location

Like all endeavours, training is key and self development in any field makes one to get better in his/her endeavour. According to the CEO of Damsellnails Studio who is based in Egbeda area of Lagos, she started learning while in higher institution and she did that for three months.

Damilola said, she has been doing this professonally for five years and she had to acquire a studio to make her clients more comfortable after making use of an open place to attract clients that pays higher.

Similarly, Anih Stella, the owner of NailzbyStella based in Allen Area of Ikeja, Lagos training is a continuous thing as new trends unfold. After undergoing training for six months, she learnt watching via YouTube.

She said the location and feasibility will determine the kind of customers and it is important to have a place that clients can easily access as nail technicians need to be seen. Being in Ikeja and close to Allen has attracted her to customers that she charges from N15,000 for a job and if the customer is impressed, she will come again to patronise.

For the growth of being a nail tech, one should be thorough and reliable and have a lot of patience for one’s clients. According to NailzbyStella, clients come all the way from Lekki, Okota, Abule-Egba and far places to patronise her business.

Start Up Capital

For a new nail tech, one needs to get materials and equipments and get a place and therefore, there is no fixed amount for start-up.

The person can begin with N50,000 minimum to get materials after acquiring a place and now build it up. A lot of patience is involved and making clients comfortable is essential as a bad experience by clients will deter them.

According to NailzbyStella, buy the materials in bulk will help a lot as she spends like N100,000 or N200,000 to get quality materials that will have a good effect on clients.

Profitability

The business is indeed profitable as women want to look stylish and fix their nails. The amount depends on location. For instance, a nail tech in places like Ikeja or Lekki area of Lagos can make as much as N300,000 monthly and it can be higher.

According to NailzbyStella, if one has two or three assistants in the studio, one can make a lot over the month as she charges minimum of N12,000 per client for a basic job.

In developed countries, a nail artist will often complete a consultation with the client to check for any signs of skin problems, deformities or nail disease before treatment and give clients advice about looking after their hands and nails, and recommend nail care product.
