Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo (MFR) is a respected businessman, philanthropist, and traditional titleholder, nicknamed by those who benefit from his philanthropy as the “Father of Orphans.”

His influence extends beyond commerce into humanitarian service and community development.

Well known as the Jarman Sokoto, Dr Kwabo has earned widespread admiration across Northern Nigeria for his unmatched commitment to the welfare of orphans, widows and other vulnerable members of society. His acts of generosity have earned him the affectionate title of “Uban Marayu” – the Father of Orphans.

Born on March 10, 1954, in Sokoto State, Kwabo was raised in an environment that instilled in him the values of hard work, discipline and compassion. The philanthropist’s admirers say his life story reflects a man who combined entrepreneurial ingenuity with a deep sense of responsibility toward his community. Through perseverance and business acumen, he rose to become one of the notable figures in Sokoto State’s economic and social landscape.

Kwabo specially made his mark in the private sector as chairman of the STCC Group of Companies, which has interests in various sectors of the economy. His success in business provided him with the resources and platform to pursue a lifelong passion for philanthropy. Unlike many wealthy entrepreneurs who confine their activities to boardrooms and investments, Kwabo chose (MFRto dedicate a large portion of his wealth to improving the lives of the rejected and abandoned.

His most enduring contribution to society is perhaps the establishment of the UK Jarma Academy in Sokoto. Founded in response to the humanitarian crisis created by insurgency in parts of Northern Nigeria, the institution was designed to provide quality education and a safe environment for orphaned and displaced children.

Many of the beneficiaries lost parents and homes as a result of violent conflict, particularly in the North-East. Through the academy, Kwabo has given hundreds of children a new opportunity to pursue their dreams and rebuild their lives.

The school combines conventional education, Islamic studies and vocational training, equipping students with both academic knowledge and practical skills. For Kwabo, education is not merely a pathway to employment but a powerful tool for restoring dignity, confidence and hope. The academy has become a symbol of resilience and compassion, attracting recognition from within and outside Nigeria.

Beyond education, Kwabo’s philanthropy covers a wide range of humanitarian interventions. Over the years, he has provided food assistance to needy families, supported healthcare programmes, sponsored community development projects and assisted countless individuals facing economic hardship. He has also supported mass wedding initiatives to help less-privileged men and women establish stable families. These interventions have touched the lives of people across different communities and strengthened his reputation as one of Northern Nigeria’s foremost philanthropists.

His influence is not limited to business and charity. As Jarman Sokoto, he occupies a respected position within the traditional institution of the Sokoto Sultanate. The title reflects his standing as a trusted community leader whose counsel is valued on matters affecting the state and the wider region. His ability to bridge traditional leadership, business success and social service has made him a unique figure in public life.

Kwabo has also maintained considerable influence in Sokoto State’s political affairs. Although he is not primarily known as a career politician, he has remained a respected elder statesman whose views command attention across political divides. His experience, integrity and commitment to public service have enabled him to play advisory and leadership roles at various times.

In recognition of his leadership qualities, the Sokoto State government appointed him Amirul Hajj for the 2025 pilgrimage, entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing the welfare and coordination of pilgrims from the state. The appointment was widely seen as an acknowledgement of his credibility, organisational skills and dedication to serving others.

What distinguishes Ummarun Kwabo is his belief that true success is measured not by personal wealth but by the positive impact one has on others’ lives. While his achievements in business are significant, his legacy is likely to be defined by the countless children he has educated, the families he has supported and the communities he has lifted through acts of generosity.

In a region confronting poverty, displacement, and social challenges, Kwabo stands as an example of how private initiative can complement public efforts in addressing societal needs. His life demonstrates that philanthropy is most meaningful when it goes beyond donations to create lasting opportunities for people to thrive.
