645 Students Participate In Caleb School National Mathematics Championship

About 645 students participated in the annual Caleb School Mathematics Championship held nationwide to sharpen their knowledge of the subject.

The students competed in different stages and the top three won top prizes of N500,000 for the first position, N400,000 and N300,000 for the second and the third respectively.

The prizes were won by Olaseinde David Darasimi, of the Genius-Tonic Height Academy who came first; Chigbo Kenechukwu Tamaraebi of UNILAG Women Society School, Lagos, who came second and Moses Deborah Oluwanifemi of Giant Stride School, third.

The dean of Art Social and Management Science, Caleb University, Prof Olateju Somorin, who represented the vice chancellor of Caleb University, Prof Nosa Owens noted that parents play a crucial role in nurturing Mathematics talents in their children.

She pointed out ways parents can foster a positive attitude towards mathematics by showing interest in the subject and encouraging curiosity.

According to Prof Somorin, parents should avoid expressing any negative feelings they may have about Maths as children often pick up on these attitudes.

“Apart from providing books and educational toys, parents can allow their children to access online resources that stimulate mathematical thinking. Games and puzzles that involve numbers and logical thinking to make learning Mathematics fun and engaging.

“Parents should encourage their children to explore mathematical concepts and praise their efforts and achievements. This boosts their confidence and motivates them to tackle more challenging problems.

“Attending school events, participating in parent-teacher meetings, and staying informed about their child’s progress in math classes show that parents value education and are invested in their child’s success.

“Parents can demonstrate the practical applications of math in everyday life, such as budgeting, cooking, and shopping. This helps children understand the relevance of math beyond the classroom.’’

The director-general of Caleb Schools, Dr Funmi Oboye stated that the management is passionate about imparting values to students.

She urged teachers to use teaching aides to demonstrate their mathematics teaching and make it very easy for the youngsters to understand.
