Dozens of victims displaced by floods, which wreaked havoc on over 100 households at Odio and Ikot Uso Ekong communities in Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom State at the weekend received succour from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

This, LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered, followed a motion to that effect by the House of Representatives member for Eket/Esit Eket/Ibeno/Onna federal constituency, Hon Okpolupm Etteh, who made a case for the relief materials to over 100 households affected by the flood scourge.

Speaking at the event, the director-general of NEMA, Alhaji Zubaira Umar, stated that the devastating effects of the flood ravaging different communities in the state call for concern and proactive preventive measures.

He urged the beneficiaries to judiciously use the items to cushion the effect of the disaster.

Umar, who was represented by a senior official of the agency, Mandu Aisuenni, lauded the lawmaker for facilitating the donation of the items by NEMA and tasked other concerned agencies, good-spirited individuals and corporate organisations to show compassion for the victims.

Etteh, who was represented by Obong Kingsley Mbre, said that he was moved by the plight of the members of his constituency, hence making a motion to that effect at plenary and facilitating the relief materials to the victims.

Responding, one of the victims, Mr Kufre Edward, appreciated the gesture by the lawmaker, noting that “his actions clearly show that he has his people at heart,” and appealed for more interventions to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
