The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that the local government chairmanship and councillorship elections for the 23 local government councils in the state will hold on October 5, 2024.

RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd), announced this on Monday during a stakeholders meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The stakeholders meeting was attended by representatives of political parties, civil society organisations (CSOs) and the media as well as security agencies.

The tenure of the elected chairmen and councillors of the local government councils expired on June 17, 2024, prompting Governor Siminalayi Fubara to appoint caretaker committees for the 23 LGAs.
