President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected for a second one-year term as chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The decision was unanimously taken by his peers during the Authority’s 65th Ordinary Session, which was held yesterday at the State House, Abuja.
Tinubu’s first tenure is set to conclude on July 9, 2024.

Tinubu also announced the President of Senegal, Bassirou Faye, as Special Envoy of the ECOWAS Commission to mediate with the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced their exit from the community earlier in the year.

According to President Tinubu, President Faye will run the new task alongside Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, Yusuf Tuggar.

At the end of the meeting, President Tinubu accepted his re-election and promised to serve his best.

“Having a new mandate, I will request Faye of Senegal to please become our special envoy alongside Tuggur to do round-the-clock work with our brothers and Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and coordinate with me, if necessary, and with the commission.

In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu said he would continue to work with other elements within the community to sustain its democratic values and structures.
