A non-governmental organization (NGO), She 4 She Initiative, has appealed to the federal government to prioritise equipping the country’s skill acquisition center to create more jobs for the teeming youths.

This appeal highlights the critical need for enhanced vocational training facilities to empower the youth and reduce unemployment.

The group made request at a seminar with the theme: “Nigerian Youth: Importance of Skill Acquisition for Economic Growth,” in commemoration of World Youth Skills Day, with the theme “Youth Skills for Peace and Development.”

Speaking at the event, the founder of She 4 She Initiative, Oyanbo Owei, said modernizing the center and providing it with up-to-date equipment will significantly contribute to the development of a skilled workforce. By doing so, the center can better prepare individuals for various trades and industries, ultimately boosting the local economy.

Owei, highlighted that investing in skills acquisition is essential for sustainable development. It equips individuals with practical skills that are in demand, thereby fostering economic growth and reducing poverty.

“The call for action has been met with positive responses from various community leaders and stakeholders, who also recognize the importance of a well-equipped skills acquisition center in driving regional development,” she said.

Owei urged the government to take swift and decisive action to address this vital issue.

She undercored the success of Nigerians in various vocational fields such as catering, hairdressing, tailoring, and textile design. “Young Nigerians are excelling in many areas. For example, I purchase tie-dye fabrics from Oyo State, crafted by young entrepreneurs who have mastered the art of creating beautiful designs. This is just one example of how skills can lead to successful ventures,” she said.

Owei stressed the need for government collaboration with youth organizations and civil society to identify key areas for development and create sustainable opportunities.

“What I want the government to do is to work with youth departments, from the Ministry of Youth to civil society organizations, to identify critical areas and integrate our people into these sectors.

“We must move beyond just handing out money; we need to provide mentorship and support to help young entrepreneurs sustain their businesses,” she said.

Also, the CEO of Edibles and Flowers, Ingonabo Maureen Amada, said the relevance of skill acquisition cannot be overemphasized. “It equips you and goes a long way, even far beyond your formal education. I’m talking about classroom work. Acquiring skills from every sector can help.”

She emphasized taking advantage of every opportunity to acquire skills, “positive skills, I mean, and put them to proper use, and become an entrepreneur.”
