Youth-driven Agric Initiatives Aim To Secure Food Security – Minister

The minister of state for Agriculture and Food Security,  Sabi Abdullahi yesterday emphasised the critical role of youth in transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape and food security.

At the National Youth in Agriculture Convention, organised by the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) in Abuja, the minister outlined the federal government’s commitment to enhancing food security through innovative programmes targeting agricultural mechanisation, soil health, and youth involvement.

Abdullahi stressed the importance of aligning agricultural practices with modern technology to boost productivity and make farming more appealing to younger generations.

The minister dispelled the notion that Nigerian youth are disinterested in agriculture, asserting that they are keen to participate but require the right conditions and support.

He stated that President Bola Tinubu has approved several powerful agri-mechanisation initiatives such as the Greener Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme amongst other policies with the aim to introduce 10,000 hectares of mechanised farming across Nigeria’s 774 agricultural areas over the next five years.

The minister  called on Nigerian youth to seize the numerous opportunities in the agricultural sector, emphasising that the future of the nation’s food security lies in their hands.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting youth-led agricultural enterprises, ensuring that agriculture is seen as a viable and profitable business.

Addressing the challenges posed by climate change and the need for sustainable practices, Abdullahi advocated for the adoption of dry-season farming and the utilisation of Nigeria’s abundant water resources.

Addressing attendees, NWAPDI national coordinator, Farmer Omolara Svensson stressed the significant potential of young leaders in shaping the nation’s agricultural future.

Speaking on the theme,  “Sowing the seeds of sustainability: Nigerian youth transforming agriculture for a greener future”, Svensson urged the youth to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

She further highlighted the collaborative efforts between NWAPDI and various stakeholders, while acknowledging the support of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and the contributions of numerous experts from both public and private sectors.
