The Nigerian Metrological Agency has predicted the likelihood of Jigawa experiencing more flooding and rainstorms this year, as the flood has so far killed 16 people, displaced 3,986 and washed away over 2,744 hectares of farmland.

The executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Dr Haruna Mariga, revealed this while giving an update of the flood disaster, that has so far affected 10 local government areas of the state.

He explained that though the rainy season has not yet reached its peak, the damage recorded so far was very alarming, and there is much fear of aggravating the situation as the water level keeps increasing.

Dr Mairiga noted that the state government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has started distributing relief material, including food items, to the victims.

” As we continue assessing the level of damages in collaboration with NEMA, we are also taking more measures including public enlightenment, construction of embankment to minimise the damages that might have been caused by the flooding in the state.
