Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has praised former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar for his contribution to Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, while sharing light-hearted moments during activities marking Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday.
Obasanjo said Abdulsalami played a historic role in managing one of the country’s most critical political transitions following years of military rule, describing his leadership during that period as significant to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a humorous exchange that drew laughter from attendees, Obasanjo joked that Abdulsalami would live to celebrate his 100th birthday but remarked that he and former Head of State Yakubu Gowon might not be around to witness it.
The former president also reflected on the events that followed the death of former military ruler Sani Abacha and the consultations that eventually paved the way for Nigeria’s transition to civilian governance in 1999.
According to Obasanjo, Abdulsalami demonstrated courage and responsibility at a difficult moment in the nation’s history by overseeing the transition process and ensuring power was handed over to an elected civilian administration.
He noted that the peaceful transfer of power helped strengthen democratic governance and remains one of the defining moments in Nigeria’s political history.
The event attracted dignitaries, political leaders and associates who gathered to honour Abdulsalami’s life, leadership and public service record.
