Tiamiyu, who is the General Manager of Pensioners FM made the call while delivering a memorial lecture in honour of late former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FRCN Ibadan Chapel, Comrade Tunde Oluwanike.

Speaking on the lecture titled, “Journalist: Working Today, Living Tomorrow,” he urged for support to ensure a secure future for journalists who scale hurdles on a daily basis to perform their duties.

He charged the government and non-government agencies against perceiving journalists as enemies, but provide an enabling environment for journalism to thrive.

On the flip side, he urged journalists to uphold the principles and ethics of the profession by safeguarding public interest, impact and value which should serve as the basis of reportage.

According to him, “Tunde’s story is not just one of personal tragedy, but a stark reminder of the risks and sacrifices inherent in our notable profession.

“His legacy invites us to reflect on the role of journalists in the society, the challenges we face today, and the impact of our work on tomorrow.”

He described the late journalist as a luminary of the airwaves, a weaver of words and a seeker of truth “who now resides in the pantheon of the departed,” adding that “his spirit undimmed by the shadows that cloak this mortal coil.“

He added, “Today, as we stand at this crossroads of memory and aspiration, let us heed the call to honour his legacy, to embrace the challenge laid before us – journalists, working today, living tomorrow.”

While noting why journalists were often referred to as the fourth estate, a crucial pillar in the foundation of any democratic society, Tiamiyi said, “We are tasked with uncovering the truth, holding power to account, and providing the public with the information they need to make informed decisions.

“This role is not just a job; it is a calling. It requires courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness, accuracy, and transparency.

“In today’s world, the importance of journalism cannot be overstated. With the rise of misinformation and the manipulation of facts, the role of journalists as custodians of truth is more vital than ever.

“We are the bridge between events and the public, between reality and perception. Our work shapes public opinion, influences policy, and can even change the course of history”, he added.

However, he noted that the path of a journalist was fraught with challenges, adding that today, journalists face myriads of obstacles that could hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively.

He enumerated the challenges to include proliferation of fake news, the rise of authoritarianism, and the increasing dangers posed by conflict zones.

With these challenges, he said Nigerian journalist found himself at crossroad in upholding the ethics of the profession in a media house with certain sentimental or political leanings,” he noted.

While noting that a journalist is also a human being like the president of any nation, he said security agencies should respect the journalism profession by stopping police brutality and the harassment of journalists.

He added that journalists should be free to carry out their duties without any fear of assault or intimidation, while also charging media owners to treat journalists like the human being they are, and ensure holistic welfare package for them.
