The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and Oxfam Nigeria, have called for equal opportunities and protection against discrimination for all workers, regardless of gender.

This call was made at the opening ceremony of a 2-day workshop in Abuja, focused on training the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment staff on “Gender Advocacy and Influencing the Nigeria Workplace Gender Policy (NWPGP).”

In his remarks, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Rt. Hon. Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha emphasised the importance of ensuring equal opportunities and protection from discrimination for all workers.

Onyejeocha stated that the workshop, organised by the Inspectorate Department, underscores a collective commitment to fostering gender equality and creating more inclusive workplaces in Nigeria.

Onyejeocha added that the workshop aims to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to advocate for gender equality within various workplace settings, aligning with the NWPGP principles.

“This workshop is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective trainers in gender advocacy. By the end of this training, participants will understand the principles and objectives of the NWPGP and be capable of advocating for gender equality in various workplace settings,” Onyejeocha said.

The Minister also highlighted the relevance of International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions that address gender equality, which aim to eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities in the workplace.

Oxfam Country Director John Makina noted that the workshop marks a significant step towards creating an inclusive and equitable workplace environment in Nigeria.

He emphasised the responsibility of advocates and influencers to shape policies that actively promote gender equality and social inclusion.

“As advocates and influencers, we are responsible for shaping policies and practices that not only acknowledge but actively promote gender equality and social inclusion, ensuring that every individual, irrespective of gender and social classification, is afforded equal opportunities and protections in the workplace.

“We are here to equip ourselves with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to drive meaningful change through this policy. By empowering ourselves, we, in turn, empower countless others who rely on us to champion their rights and aspirations in the world of work by closing the gender pay gap, creating inclusive and diversified workplaces, and providing a safe space for everyone for collective and personal growth, and promoting decent work and gender-responsive work culture in our nation.”

Director for Gender in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Friya Bulus, reiterated the Nigerian Government’s commitment to eliminating gender discrimination and ensuring equal access to political, social, and economic opportunities for all citizens.
