Institute Moves To Ensure Sustainable Shelter In Nigeria

The Nigerian Institute of Building said it is working on a communique that will be beneficial to stakeholders, policy makers, captains of industries and its members to provide professional excellence and leadership for sustainable shelter.

The president of the of the Nigerian Institute Of Building. Bldr. Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa stated this at the opening ceremony of the 54th builders’ conference and annual general meeting (AGM), tagged Awka 2024’ holding at Awka, Anambra State between August 20 through 24, 2024.

He said, “The 54th Annual General Meeting of the Institute of Building is an opportunity to deliberate on wide ranging issues confronting the Building Profession through which a rich communique beneficial to stakeholders, policy makers, captains of industries and our members will be developed in order to provide professional excellence and leadership for sustainable shelter.”

He further said the institute aims to “foster a robust dialogue on how we can enhance building practices to contribute meaningfully to sustainable national development.

“We will explore topics such as: Alternative Building Materials for sustainable National Development; Research and Development in Building Practice for Sustainable National Development; Emerging Technologies in Building Practice for Sustainable National Development; Builders’ Roles in Skills – gap bridging for Sustainable National Development and effective implementation of physical planning and Development Control & Building Control Agency/Laws for Sustainable National Development.”

The president o the institute while appreciating the development to ensure development of builders across the country, said “We express our profound gratitude to the executive governor of Ebonyi State, Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for approving three laws that will govern the systematic growth of the built environment.

“The laws are: Ebonyi State Physical Planning Permit Regulations Law, 2024; Ebonyi State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2024; and Ebonyi State Building Control Regulation Law, 2024.

He however noted that “The Institute strongly urges all other state governments to pass such legislations and establish building control agencies staffed by the appropriate professionals.”
