The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has asked the government at all levels to set aside 25 per cent of the security budgets for training and provision of empowerment for Nigerians to stop the growing trend of insecurity in the country.

FOMWAN, who expressed concerns over the effects of insecurity in the country, noted that the issue of insecurity was an accumulation of so many problems confronting the nation.

Speaking in Akure, the Ondo State capital, at a press conference heralding the association’s National Conference, tagged “Ondo 2024,” the National Amirah, FOMWAN, Alhaja Rafiat Idowu Sani, disclosed that the government must factor in the issues of agriculture, health, and empowerment to stop the menace.

Flanked by other association leaders, including Prof. Sadiat Omar, Prof.Lateefah Durosinmi, and Dr. Sumaya Hamzat, among others, the Amirah noted that “if attention is given to that, there will be a drastic reduction in the issue of this insecurity.”

FOMWAN said, “Proper training and provision of empowerment will go a long way. When people are not hungry, insecurity will go down. Governments should set aside 25 per cent of the security vote for this.

Let them try it for a few years and involve FOMWAN in the implementation.

“FOMWAN members have been contributing from their meagre salaries to alleviate the suffering of some communities. There are so many things contributing to the insecurity issue in the country. If attention is given to that, there will be a drastic reduction in this insecurity issue.

“We have many policies on empowerment, but the implementation could be better. If we stand up and implement this, there will be an improvement. Let them invite FOMWAN to the programme; we will also let you know how to implement it.

“We also ignore the fact that some communities are glorifying bad behaviour. For instance, when a policeman builds ten houses, they praise them instead of asking questions. The issue is an accumulation of so many things.”
