A nonprofit organisation, the Blacks Ancestral Native Communities (BANC) Foundation, has raised the alarm over the negative effects associated with irregular migration saying it is high time stakeholders in Nigeria made concerted efforts to stop the trend.
The president and chief executive officer of BANC Foundation, Dr Chibuzor Onyema, who expressed the concern at a press conference held in Lagos, lamented that “Every year, thousands of our youths embark on perilous journeys, driven by the allure of greener pastures abroad. They flee from unemployment, economic hardship and social instability, often falling prey to exploitation, human trafficking and inhumane conditions.
“This has resulted in the loss of our brightest minds and most energetic youth which is weakening our national and continental potential and saps the strength we need to build a thriving, prosperous Africa.”
The BANC founder mentioned the challenges this has caused, including instability beyond borders, straining diplomatic relations, raising security concerns and complicating international cooperation.
As a way forward, he said the foundation is set to host a summit that would address irregular migration on September 19, 2024 in Abuja.
He said the event themed, “The JAPA Conundrum: Comprehensive Strategies for Addressing the Irregular Migration Crisis,” will bring together experts, policymakers and stakeholders to discuss and strategise on solutions to the global challenge.
“As a foundation, we don’t want to dwell on the symptoms but are interested in the causes.”
We want to create an environment where our youth can thrive within our borders; where they can see a future filled with opportunity and hope and we are doing this through our flagship initiative called the Irregular Migration Mitigation Skills and Resource Centre (IMMSaRC).
“This centre will provide essential vocational training, job opportunities, and a pathway to national and international employment. By equipping our youth with skills and knowledge, we empower them to build successful careers and contribute meaningfully to our nation’s growth,” he said.
