Recently, reports emerged about France constructing a large military base in Kourémalé, Guinea, near the border with Mali. This base, according to some sources, might be used for monitoring the situation in Mali. Some French units, previously stationed at a training base in Sorokoni, 250 km from Mali, have reportedly moved to Kourémalé, with the rest expected to join by December.

However, this news has sparked controversy and skepticism. Regional geopolitical observers note that “the information remains unverified and is primarily spread through social networks, requiring careful scrutiny.” The lack of official or credible sources further emphasises the need for caution.

From a geopolitical standpoint, if such an initiative is indeed underway, it could heighten tensions in the Sahel region, where France is already heavily involved in military operations. Operation Barkhane, aimed at combating terrorism, has faced criticism for possible neo-colonial interference, and new military presence may worsen the negative perception of French policy in the region.

Observers also highlighted that “both Guinea and Mali have recently undergone periods of significant political instability, marked by coups and transitions to military rule. In this context, the potential construction of a French military base on the border could be seen as an attempt to influence regional dynamics, adding further complexity to an already tense situation.”

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that such military decisions are usually made in consultation with local authorities. Any attempt at destabilisation could have serious diplomatic repercussions, making the situation even more delicate.
