Students of Adamawa State Polytechnic have barricaded the entrance to the institution’s main campus in protest over scarcity of water and power supply.

The students were seen responding by throwing stones at security personnel who were firing tear gas to disperse them.

Sources from the institution said the 21 boreholes on the main campus have been without running water as students had to trek distance to get water for cooking.

The situation is compounded by aging infrastructures like water reservoir, broken pipelines resulting in leakage of water.

The protesting students prevented lecturers and other non-academic staff from gaining entrance into the campus as at 7 am on Monday.

One of the students, Mr Lauje Kuturu, said the management have turned deaf ears in making efforts to address the situation.

“We have been without water and power for one week now and had no option,” he said.

The Information Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr Albert Matila confirmed the protest, saying officials from the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) have restored power back to the institution.

Matila added that management are currently holding meeting over the matter and that its decision would be made public.

He equally confirmed that the school is still on session, adding that there is no casualty or destruction of property recorded in the protest.

LEADERSHIP reports that there was heavy presence of security personnel by the entrance of the institution to prevent breakdown of law and order.
