Speaking to LEADERSHIP Friday via a telephone conversation, one of the residents of the town said that members of insurgents stormed the Buni Yadai at around 1 am on Wednesday.

According to him, hundreds of insurgents invaded the town, moved directly to the vigilante premises, and opened fire sporadically from several directions.

Another member of the vigilante group confirmed the incident and said the attackers were burning the entire premise of the vigilante group and destroying all their goods found there.

One of the vigilante members injured by a bullet, who is currently admitted at the General Hospital Damaturu, the state capital, Goni Modu, said that no life was lost during the attack.

He said they accused them of being members of the vigilante group, and they also set ablaze the entire premises, leaving the vigilantes destitute.

Modu said, “The insurgents had arrived in large numbers. They didn’t kill anyone, and most of us escaped nearby. Unfortunately, the street bullet hit my leg. As you see me on hospital bed receiving treatment.”

Our correspondent reports that most villages have formed vigilante groups to protect their communities from insurgent attacks.

The latest attack came after another deadly village raid in Mafa village of Tarmuwa local government, which killed about 130 villagers.

The authorities also suspect Boko Haram of being behind these attacks, but there has so far been no claim of responsibility from the group for the Buni Yadi attack.
