LEADERSHIP Friday can report that the nine-day flood that ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, caused a loss of about N27 billion.

It was gathered that Maiduguri, a centre for trading and agricultural products, traded over 3.2 billion daily. The submersion of over 70 per cent of Maiduguri city caused it to lose over N3 billion daily for nine days.

According to the president of the Borno Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (BOCCIMA), Alhaji Ahmed Ashemi, apart from Lagos State, no other border city is used for trading on the African Continent like Maiduguri, bringing high income to the state and the zone.

He described Maiduguri as an essential trading station that once had many industrial activities. It is also the most populated area in the state and harbours many economic activities at the micro level, where a lot of small-scale trading is done.

According to the BOCCIMA boss, Maiduguri accounts for about N3 billion in business transactions daily, with about N1.5 billion generated daily at the Monday market alone.

He said a conservative estimate of the flood disaster that destroyed so many businesses and the number of days lost in business so far due to the incident points to about N3 billion lost daily.

Meanwhile, as of Wednesday, the list of pledges and actual receipts of donations and support to the government of Borno State from corporate entities, state governments, state and National Assembly members, individuals, and non-governmental organisations totalled N21 billion.

This is in addition to food and non-food items donated by corporate organisations, Individuals, and Institutions, among others.

According to a statement issued about donations for the flood victims by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA ) on Social Media to Governor Babagana Zulum, Mr Abdulrahman Bundi, not all the donations have been credited to the Borno State Government.

“Similarly, details of the redeemed pledges of donations and material support will be announced in due course,” Bundi said.
