The Nigerian Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has successfully hosted the 2024 Children’s Cultural Fiesta in Abuja, which aimed to promote Nigerian cultural heritage and values among the younger generation.

The event, held yesterday at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Garki, brought together over 500 children from various schools across the city.

Speaking at the event, executive secretary/CEO of NICO, Otunba Abiodun Ajiboye, said the Children’s Cultural Fiesta is designed to instil cultural pride and awareness in our young ones, ensuring they appreciate and preserve our rich cultural heritage.

“The Children’s Cultural Fiesta is one of the Institute’s major programs and an offshoot of the NICO Children’s Club in schools. These platforms are designed to promote cultural awareness, cross-cultural understanding, and peaceful coexistence among our young ones.

“The aim is to groom future cultural leaders and ambassadors and preserve our heritage for future generations. As young ambassadors of our cultures, you have the power to shape a brighter future. You are the threads that will weave together to create a vibrant fabric of unity and understanding.

“Therefore, let us celebrate Nigeria’s colourful attires, delicious cuisines, enchanting music and captivating dances,” Ajiboye said.

Dr Chinwe Abara, a lecturer at NICO training school, emphasised the importance of promoting cultural education and orientation among children.

“This initiative will help our children understand and appreciate our cultural diversity; by teaching them about their cultural heritage, we empower them to become responsible and patriotic citizens,” she said.

The fiesta featured a range of activities, including traditional music and dance, traditional cuisines, and traditional hair-making.

The Children’s Cultural Fiesta is part of NICO’s nationwide initiative to promote cultural education and awareness among young Nigerians.
