The director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusua’ Ahmed has emphasised the critical role auditors play in ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the Scheme’s financial operations.

He stated this in Abuja yesterday, during the training workshop for Internal Auditors with the theme “Enhancing Efficiency and Effectiveness of Financial Operations in the Internal Control System-the Role of the Internal Auditor.”

Represented by Chris Jimba, director procurement, Ahmed called on auditors to be proactive in their responsibilities, fostering a culture of accountability that underpins the organization’s mission.

“As you know, internal control measures form the foundation of our accountability system, ensuring that funds are utilized efficiently and effectively for the intended purposes. Furthermore, these measures promote transparency, build stakeholder confidence, and foster a culture of trust.

“Conversely, a weak internal control system can lead to severe consequences, including mismanagement of funds and financial losses due to lack of accountability. Such negative outcomes can hinder the progress of the Scheme, damage its credibility and erode public trust.

“Therefore, it is crucial that we reinforce our internal financial control systems, and be steadfast in safeguarding the resources of the Scheme. Moreover, by enhancing our financial controls, we are not only meeting regulatory requirements, but also advancing good governance.

“Let me remind you that, as Internal Auditors, your roles are critical to ensuring financial integrity and efficiency within the Scheme. It is essential that you continue to develop and demonstrate your capacity to assess risks, identify weaknesses, and recommend corrective actions,” he added.

Also speaking, the acting director internal audit, Dr. Levi Agim said it is imperative to strengthen the internal control system of the Scheme in order to safeguard our financial resources.

“The workshop is a stepping stone towards that goal. I urge each of us to participate actively in every aspect of this training programme. Endeavour to engage fully in the discussions and share your insights with one another.”
