The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has issued a stern warning against the emergence of unauthorised leadership at the Federal Civil Service branch of the union.

NUP national president, Godwin Abumisi, handed the warning during the 2nd Sectoral National Delegates Congress in Abuja yesterday.

Speaking to delegates, Abumisi condemned the activities of individuals parading themselves with unrecognized titles, calling it a self-serving act that undermines the union‘s constitution.

He stressed that any form of leadership in the NUP must come through a legitimate process involving the quadrennial delegates‘ conference, which is the recognised constitutional procedure for electing leaders.

He further urged the Ministry of Labour, which oversees the union, to stop recognising unauthorised leaders, asserting that only those elected at the delegates‘ congress should be considered the legitimate representatives of the Federal Civil Service branch.

The NUP president also emphasised the importance of the election process, and urged all members to vote wisely.

He called for the result of the election to be respected and affirmed that the leadership emerging from the process would be the only legitimate body for the Federal Civil Service branch.

He said, „May I use this opportunity to sound a note of warning to all various groups in the Federal Civil Sevice branch, claiming leadership and going about with different unrecognized, irrelevant and self-glorified titles to desist from such act. Power is gotten from the people through the ballot. Today is a day for the ballot to speak. I therefore enjoin all distinguished delegates here today to vote wisely for a leader of their choice“.

Addressing the delegates, chairman of the caretaker committee, Comrade Frederick Eguaoba announced that the committee had fulfilled all its obligations and restored unity to the Federal Civil Service Branch under the NUP.

„Our term of reference was clear from the beginning, and today, by the grace of God, we are at the final bus stop. We have successfully reorganized our branches across the country and conducted elections into all local branches,“ he said.
