The Director General of the Global Initiative for Good Governance (GIGG), Dr Emeka Kalu, has supported former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to the National Assembly for a six-year single-term rotational presidency among the country’s six geopolitical zones.

LEADERSHIP Friday reports that Atiku proposed that the presidency be rotated between the North and South in a memorandum to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review.

According to Atiku, “The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the federation on a single term of six years, flowing between the North and South on the single term of six years respectively.”

Atiku, therefore, urged the National Assembly to “amend Section 135(2) to read: ‘Subject to the provisions of subsection (1), the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of six years.”

However, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP on Friday, Dr Kalu said the rotational presidency will solve pockets of criminality and agitation in the country.

According to him, rotation will allow the six geo-political zones to produce the country’s president.

“If actualised, this Atiku’s proposal for a constitutional amendment to capture rotational Presidency between the Southern and Northern regions would enable each of the six geo-political zones the power to produce the President of the federal republic of Nigeria remains the only ripen fruit our democracy would be believed to have harvested in the history of Nigeria.

“The 2023 PDP Presidential candidate has shown his unbiased commitment to justice and equity where the nation’s multi-ethnic diversities would be given equal opportunity to participate in national governance. Marginalisation, poorly implemented federal character principles and the agitations for equity have continued to spark civil unrest in the Country, leading to the various violent cases of civil disorder, terrorism and other pockets of criminalities.’’
