Flood Kills 2, Displaces 237 In Niger

No fewer than 237 people were affected and two deaths recorded in the flood disaster that occurred at Kontagora local government area of Niger State.

LEADERSHIP gathered that six communities were ravaged by the flood as the area recorded  increased rainfall this year and the people disregarded early warning signs.

LEADERSHIP recalled that National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Niger state office  had called on some communities to start moving to higher grounds  as well as residents of the state to clear their drainages for free flow of waters.

Head, NEMA Minna operations office,  Zainab Sa’idu, said NEMA cautioned the people in what she referred to consistent rainfall between the range of 1260mm and 1360mm thereby increasing  water levels of different rivers across the state.

Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello who confirmed the devastation of the flood,  paid a sympathy visit to the people affected by the disaster and donated 100 fabrics, 500 bags of grains comprising rice, maize and millet as relief materials.

He presented the items to the Emir of Kontagora at his palace for onward distribution to the victims, saying the gesture was to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

The Emir of Kontagora, HRH, Alhaji Muhammadu Barau Mu’azu II, and the chairman of Kontagora local government, Alhaji Shehu Pawa lauded the governor and confirmed the number of victims and death.
