In a landmark moment for Nigerian theatre and global representation, Destiny Osagiede has been cast to portray Joseph Laroche, the only Black man documented on the RMS Titanic, in an upcoming stage production in the United Kingdom.
Osagiede, the first Nigerian-born actor to take on this role, will star in a production directed by Dr. Carlette L. Norwood for the Birmingham Black Box Theatre. The play is set to run from October 10-12, 2024, as part of the UK’s Black History Month celebrations.
Joseph Laroche, a Haitian engineer, boarded the Titanic with his family in 1912, hoping for a better life in Haiti. Although Laroche perished in the disaster, his wife and daughters survived. His story, largely untold in Titanic’s mainstream narrative, is being brought to life through Osagiede’s powerful portrayal, highlighting a forgotten chapter in history.
Osagiede’s role marks a major milestone for African actors in international theatre, showcasing the growing impact of Nollywood talent and pushing for greater diversity in storytelling.
