In an effort to enhance emotional intelligence and mental wellbeing among couples, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) through the Women Affairs Secretariat has initiated a menopause awareness programme targeted at couples in Abuja.

The programme with the theme: “The We Factor” was officially launched on Thursday in Abuja by the Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi.

Benjamins-Laniyi said the initiative aligns with the secretariat’s advocacy for caring and shared responsibility as essential components for unlocking socio-economic prosperity.

Speaking on the crucial role that relationship dynamics play in marital success, the Mandate Secretary noted that many issues faced by couples stem from misunderstanding and communication failures among couples.

“We have brought couples together to empower them with the essential knowledge needed to navigate these challenges more effectively,” she stated.

Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi further explained that while menopause has traditionally been perceived as a women’s issue, the initiative reframes the narrative to focus on the importance of collective care.

“Our approach is not just about addressing menopause as a concern for women; we are investing in the holistic emotional security of our communities. Happy people are healthy people, and healthy individuals contribute to wealth creation and economic growth.

“Menopause represents a significant transition in a woman’s life when her menstrual periods cease, and conception is no longer possible. However, it can also bring about a variety of physical and emotional symptoms,” she said.

The mandate secretary listed several symptoms associated with menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, joint and muscle pain, mood swings, irritability, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating.

She emphasised the importance of collective support for women experiencing menopause, specifically from their partners, to sustain the emotional stability necessary for a harmonious household.

The Acting Director, Women Affairs Department at the secretariat, Mrs Aina Sanni, while addressing the audience, noted that couples and stakeholders from all six area councils of the FCT participated in the inaugural programme, marking the first of such initiative of 2024.

“We have recognised that menopause significantly impacts women in our society, and it is vital to involve men in this process to help their partners cope and overcome the challenges associated with this transition,” she stated.

Sanni assured particpants that under the guidance of the FCT Minister and the Mandate Secretary, the menopause awareness programme will become a regular annual event. “This is only the beginning; we are committed to making this an ongoing initiative,” Sanni said.

She further said that the launch of the programme signified a proactive step toward enhancing the emotional wellbeing of families in the FCT, fostering a supportive environment where both men and women can navigate life’s transitions together.
