Foundation To Transform Primary Healthcare Across Nigeria

Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation announced yesterday that it will nominate primary healthcare centres in local government areas across Nigeria that urgently need revitalisation.

The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming public service delivery in Africa and improving access to quality primary healthcare is pleased to announce a nationwide call for nominations as part of the Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme (ADHFP).

This initiative, facilitated by the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN), seeks to revitalise primary healthcare centres in Nigeria. Having already revitalised four healthcare centres in Edo State and with plans for 14 more in the state, the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation is now reaching out to the public to nominate additional Primary Healthcare centres in local government areas across Nigeria that are in urgent need of revitalisation.

The nomination campaign will run from November 4th to December 31st, 2024. Primary healthcare centres are indispensable to community health, providing essential services such as immunisations, maternal care, and disease prevention. Yet, despite over 30,000 of them nationwide, approximately 80% lack the resources necessary to deliver basic healthcare services.

This gap leaves millions vulnerable, particularly women and children. Alarmingly, Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate remains one of the highest globally, with 1 in 22 women facing a lifetime risk of death due to pregnancy or childbirth-related complications.

The director of health philanthropy at the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Dr Nonye Egekwu, highlighted the critical nature of this initiative: “Revitalising our primary healthcare centres is essential for addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges at the community level.

“Through the ADHFP, we are dedicated to transforming these centres into world-class facilities capable of providing essential care and support to Nigerian families.” The ADHFP exemplifies an innovative public-private partnership that empowers individuals and organisations to adopt primary healthcare centres, driving infrastructure, equipment, and staffing improvements.

“This collaboration aligns seamlessly with national healthcare objectives and reinforces the government’s agenda to strengthen primary healthcare systems across Nigeria. The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation encourages all public, health stakeholders, and local community members to actively participate in this transformative initiative by nominating Primary Healthcare Centres that require revitalisation.”

“This is a unique opportunity for communities to advocate for their healthcare needs and play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in Nigeria,” he added.

The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation accomplishes its mission by supporting the reform initiatives of public sector entities, providing financing, consulting support, and capacity-building programmes and resources for the public sector workforce.

The foundation provides funding and strategic support to drive the work of affiliate organisations such as ABC Health, the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN), the Nigerian Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF), and others.
