In an effort to enhance emotional intelligence and mental well-being among couples, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) through the Women Affairs Secretariat has initiated a menopause awareness programme aimed at couples in Abuja.

The programme was officially launched yesterday in Abuja by Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the mandate secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, with the theme “The We Factor.”

She said that this initiative aligns with the secretariat’s advocacy for caring and shared responsibility, which are essential components for unlocking socio-economic prosperity.

Benjamins-Laniyi while speaking on the crucial role that relationship dynamics play in marital success, noted that many issues faced by couples stem from misunderstandings and failures in communication between men and women.

“We have brought couples together to empower them with the essential knowledge needed to navigate these challenges more effectively,” she stated.

She further explained that while menopause has traditionally been perceived as a women’s issue, the initiative reframes this narrative to focus on the importance of collective care.

“Our approach is not just about addressing menopause as a concern for women; we are investing in the holistic emotional security of our communities. Happy people are healthy people, and healthy individuals contribute to wealth creation and economic growth.

“Menopause represents a significant transition in a woman’s life when her menstrual periods cease, and conception is no longer possible. However, it can also bring about a variety of physical and emotional symptoms,” she said.

The mandate secretary listed several symptoms associated with menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, joint and muscle pain, mood swings, irritability, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating.

She emphasized the importance of collective support for women experiencing menopause, specifically from their partners, to sustain the emotional stability necessary for a harmonious household.

The acting director of the Women Affairs Department within the secretariat, Mrs Aina Sanni, while addressing the audience, noted that couples and stakeholders from all six area councils of the FCT participated in the inaugural programme, marking the first such initiative of 2024.
