The Yobe State Government said plans are on top gear to shift from the current electricity source to solar energy for public secondary schools next year.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, revealed this during an inspection of various ongoing government projects at schools in Nguru recently.

Wali who inspected Government Higher Islamic College, Nguru, Government Day Secondary School Gashua, Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) Yobe Campus, and Government Girls Unity College, Damaturu, among others disclosed that the initiative was part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to enhance the quality of education in the state.

The SSG highlighted that the multifaceted approach adopted by the government since 2019 was meant to reform the education sector including measures to decongest schools.

“To combat overcrowding in urban areas, the state has built new model schools and collaborated with traditional leaders to boost primary school enrollment in rural regions.

“Government has covered the examination fees for students sitting for the 2025 West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) exams, alleviating financial pressure on parents.

“New secondary schools for girls have been established to empower young women to pursue their education without barriers.”

He emphasised the government’s significant investment in rehabilitating schools, providing essential furniture, and enhancing school facilities.
