Team Nigeria opened her account for medals at the ongoing 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja yesterday with two gold and a silver medal from men and women’s handball and men’s 87kg Greco-Roman wrestling events.
Nigeria continued its dominance of handball in Africa winning both men and women handball event gold medals at the Package B of Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja.
The country’s military men team defeated their West African rival Ghana 28-18 in the final to clinch the gold and confirmed their superior power in the game.
The achievement was a significant accomplishment for Nigeria, especially against a strong competitor like Ghana. It reflects the hard work and dedication of Nigeria’s Military team.
Recall that Nigeria’s Under 18 men’s handball team are current champions of the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) Trophy Africa Men Continental Championship.
Also, Team Nigeria’s wrestler Tochukwu Okeke won silver in the men’s 87kg Greco-Roman wrestling event of the ongoing 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja yesterday.
Okeke defeated Tunisia’s Sobri Mmosria 7-5 in his final game of the event to snatch a silver medal for Nigeria, with his wife right there to support him.
Athletes from military establishments across Africa are competing in nearly 20 sporting events, which includes athletics, football, basketball, golf, shooting, judo, volleyball, cycling, handball, boxing and others
The Africa Military Games which was officially declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, November 20, will run till November 30, 2024 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.
