Santos forward Neymar Jr. could face a six-match suspension after being reported to Brazil’s Sports Tribunal over an alleged breach of the so-called ‘Vinícius Júnior rule’.
The 34-year-old was sent off during Santos’ 1–0 league victory over Bahia on Saturday after covering his mouth with his hand while arguing with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor.
Bahia have since condemned what the club described as alleged verbal abuse directed at Nestor during the confrontation.
Speaking after the match, Nestor said Neymar’s alleged remarks were “highly disrespectful — both towards me and towards the Bahia jersey”.
Neymar, however, hit back at the midfielder, accusing him of using “one of the dirtiest tricks in football”.
The incident has drawn attention to the rule associated with Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior, which targets discriminatory or abusive conduct that may be concealed when players cover their mouths during confrontations.
Neymar’s case is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday, when the tribunal is expected to consider the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether disciplinary action is warranted.
A suspension of up to six matches would represent a significant setback for the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward as Santos continue their league campaign.
