From the “Doctrine of Necessity” motion while serving as a senator in 2010, to his role as FCT minister and, most recently, as two-time democratically elected governor of Bauchi State, his transformative projects and impactful leadership have propelled his emergence from a journalist to a national leader. Known for his dedication to the “Bauchi Project,” his journey from local to national politics showcases a leader driven by service, innovation and empathy.
Bala Mohammed’s career began in journalism. He worked as a reporter and editor with The Mirage, Democrat and News Agency of Nigeria, covering stories with integrity and a commitment to the truth.
Journalism laid the foundation for his later roles in public service, where he would bring a deep understanding of people’s struggles and hopes. His experience in the media sharpened his sense of justice and inspired him to pursue a career in politics.
In 2007, Mohammed entered politics as a senator representing Bauchi South. In the Senate, he quickly gained national attention for his clear voice and passion for reform. He championed bills on public service and anti-corruption, standing out as a strong advocate for transparency. His work gained national respect, leading to his appointment as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in 2010, where he focused on urban development and policy reforms.
Mohammed brought to the FCT a people-first approach, launching projects in housing, transportation and environmental management. One of his landmark initiatives was the Abuja Rail Mass Transit System, designed to ease traffic and make commuting faster for residents. His time as minister left a lasting impact, making him a national figure.
In 2019, Bala Mohammed became governor of Bauchi State, a role he took on with clear goals to uplift the state. His administration focuses on transforming critical sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, agriculture and security.
Operating at the gateway to the northeast, a region challenged by insurgency, Governor Mohammed has focused on strengthening local security networks. He supports the state security apparatus and local vigilante groups to maintain peace. His administration has made strides in promoting unity across communities by engaging leaders in dialogue and peace-building efforts. He has distributed over 50 Hilux vans to different security outfits. Rewardingly, Bauchi is currently adjudged to be one of the most peaceful states in the country.
Understanding that education is vital for progress, the governor invested in building new schools and renovating existing ones. He constructed and renovated over 5,000 classrooms. His administration recruited and retrained teachers, ensuring that children have access to quality education in a safe and conducive environment. He steered Bauchi out of the ranks of a state with the highest number of out-of-school children in the country, from 1.2 million to about 521,000.
Under Governor Mohammed’s leadership, the Bauchi health sector has been another area of priority. He launched several healthcare projects to provide essential services, particularly for rural communities. Under his administration, over 1,000 general hospitals and primary healthcare centres were either renovated or built from the scratch. His administration’s flagship “Bauchi Healthcare Revival” project aims to ensure that every community has access to health services within a reasonable distance. With these efforts, maternal and infant mortality rates have decreased, showing the impact of a stronger healthcare system.
Bauchi State’s infrastructure landscape has also been transformed under Governor Mohammed. The state now has better roads, bridges and drainage systems. One of his most-praised achievements is the urban renewal project in Bauchi City which not only saw the reconstruction and renovation of existing road networks but also the construction of two modern flyovers at Wunti and Central markets to make the city more navigable and secure. His administration has also built rural roads, connecting farmers to markets and improving economic opportunities.
Governor Mohammed is dedicated to making agriculture a viable sector. He provided subsidies for fertilizers, farming equipment, and seeds to boost local production. The Bauchi Agricultural Transformation programme also supports farmers with training in modern techniques. This initiative has not only strengthened food security but also created jobs, particularly for the youth.
Bala Mohammed’s administration has placed a strong emphasis on empowering women and the youth. Through the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP), a multi-billion naira initiative for startups, training and capital have been disbursed to help young people and women start small businesses, leading to financial independence. He also granted loans of about 1,000 tricycles, popularly called Keke NAPEP, to youths at no interest rate. His administration’s microfinance programmes are geared toward making credit accessible, particularly to those who traditionally lack access to financial resources.
Governor Bala Mohammed’s style of leadership is often described as hands-on. He visits project sites, talks to citizens and listens to their concerns. This personal approach has earned him trust across the state, with people seeing him as a leader who truly cares.
As he continues to steer Bauchi State toward progress, Governor Bala remains focused on long-term goals. His administration’s projects aim to ensure that Bauchi’s transformation is sustainable and inclusive as he strives to position Bauchi State as a model for development in Northern Nigeria.
