The premiere of VoicesWithin, a powerful advocacy film addressing the harsh realities of gender-based violence (GBV), has spurred urgent calls for action and deeper societal engagement in tackling this pervasive issue.
Organized by the Daurama Foundation in Abuja as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the event aligned with the theme “UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” It brought together survivors, policymakers, advocates, and creatives committed to amplifying survivors’ voices and driving meaningful change.
The evening commenced with a red-carpet reception, setting a tone of solidarity and purpose.
Attendees, including community leaders and representatives from various organizations, reflected on the poignant stories depicted in VoicesWithin.
President of the Daurama Foundation, delivered a powerful opening address, Dr. Samira Buhari urging collective action: “VoicesWithin is a rallying cry for change. Every story reflects a reality many endure in silence. Today, we must unite not just to watch but to listen, learn, and act. The fight to end gender-based violence begins with each of us.”
National Programme Officer for UN Women Nigeria, Patience Ekeoba echoed this sentiment in her keynote speech, emphasizing the need for immediate action: “Gender-based violence is a scar on humanity that demands urgent attention. Through VoicesWithin, we are reminded that awareness is the first step, but real change requires action.”
Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, commended the initiative, remarking on the film’s impact
Producer of VoicesWithin and CEO of Take 7 Media, Bem Pever, highlighted the transformative potential of storytelling in advocacy:“Stories can change hearts, minds, and societies. Through VoicesWithin, we are not just telling a story—we are igniting a movement. Men must join this conversation, be allies, and actively work toward a world free from violence.”
A panel discussion followed the screening, featuring thought leaders and advocates who shared actionable insights on combating GBV.
Founder of the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation, Dorothy Njemanze called for dismantling societal stigmas: “Silence allows violence to thrive. We must create safe spaces where survivors feel supported, heard, and empowered to seek justice.”
The head of the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Unit at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Yewande Gbola-Awopetu stressed the integration of legal and community support systems:“Justice isn’t just about laws—it’s about ensuring survivors have the support they need to rebuild their lives. Advocacy like this film plays a crucial role in that process.”
