Senator Ibrahim Lamido (APC, Sokoto East) has offered scholarships to 100 indigent students of Sokoto State to study in India.

The beneficiaries were sponsored to study pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology, engineering, computer science, software engineering, cyber security and machine learning.

Addressing the first batch of the beneficiaries during a farewell message, Lamido said the gesture was informed by the need to contribute to the educational development of the state.

Lamido said the beneficiaries’ admission has already been secured at Geeta and MJR Universities, describing the two institutions as reputable.

He noted that the sponsorship was a fully funded package for the beneficiaries selected from the local government that made up the Sokoto East Senatorial District.

“The package encompasses tuition fees, accommodation, feeding, exam fees, monthly stipends, visa charges, flight tickets and health insurance”, the lawmaker stated.

He disclosed that the first batch of 57 students had already departed for India, and steps are being taken for the departure of the second batch. He added that each student’s sponsorship gulped about N45,000,000 for four years.

Lamido added that the scholarship was meant to pay back his constituents by sponsoring their children to acquire education, noting that “this is the best way I can pay my constituents. When the beneficiaries graduate and return to Nigeria, they will be very useful to the society, Sokoto and the nation.” He urged the beneficiaries to focus on their studies and be good ambassadors of Sokoto State and Nigeria.

The visibly elated beneficiaries lauded the lawmaker for the gesture, describing it as phenomenal. Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Muhammad Salisu Gatawa said most of them never dreamt of going abroad for studies, but God, in His infinite mercy, has made it possible through the lawmaker.

“All I would have to say is that we will reciprocate this precious gesture by concentrating on our studies,” said Gatawa.
