Director of United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray has announced his resignation which is set to take effect at the conclusion of President Joe Biden’s administration.

Wray’s decision came ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, marking the end of a seven-year tenure defined by navigating significant challenges and ensuring the FBI’s independence.

The announcement was made during an address to FBI employees at the agency’s headquarters on Wednesday night.

A video excerpt of his remarks was shared on the FBI’s official X account, while the full speech was published on the Bureau’s website.

“Since the moment I started this job, my focus has been on what’s best for our institution—for the Bureau and the American people we serve,” Wray said, his voice reflecting both conviction and emotion. “This decision, while not easy, is about safeguarding the Bureau’s future.”

Under Wray’s leadership, the FBI faced escalating threats ranging from cyberattacks on critical infrastructure to the deadly opioid epidemic ravaging communities across the United States.

He highlighted the Bureau’s significant achievements, including dismantling violent crime networks, thwarting terrorist plots, and preventing a mass casualty attack just weeks ago.

“These challenges are formidable and growing,” Wray warned, citing adversaries like China and the misuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence by criminals.

Despite these evolving threats, he expressed confidence in the FBI’s resilience, describing the agency’s 38,000 employees as the “bedrock” of its success.

“Our strength lies in each other,” he remarked. “We’re not on any one side. We’re on the American people’s side—the Constitution’s side.”

Wray’s speech underscored the Bureau’s unwavering commitment to independence and integrity, even amidst external pressures.

He emphasised that the FBI’s mission is rooted in doing “the right thing, the right way—every time,” a principle he said would remain the foundation of the institution.

As the FBI prepared for a change in leadership, Wray expressed pride in the agency’s steadfast dedication to protecting the nation and urged employees to remain vigilant in their mission, describing their work as both challenging and noble.

“Our work is never done,” he concluded. “But it’s noble work. And together, you will continue to uphold it.”
