To boost food production in the face of growing hunger in the land, Akwa Ibom State governor Pastor Umo Eno has launched a homegrown farming initiative with a N25 million seed cash incentive for at least 50 residents to access.
The governor, while speaking at the 2024 Christmas Carols at the Udoudoma Avenue, Uyo, the state capital over the weekend, announced a N500,000 bonanza each for at least 50 Akwa Ibom people with lovely home gardens.
He explained that the idea is to encourage those who have farms in and around their homes as earlier directed by his administration, to expand and develop them to boost food sustainability programmes in the state.
According to him, the scheme is a programme modelled after Nigeria’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s “Every – Home -a -Garden initiative.”
Towards this end, the governor directed that all participants in the bonus scheme are expected to record and upload a two minutes video showing the farm and visible landmarks for consideration and clearance to access the facility.
He noted that “Akwa Ibom is blessed with a fertile land and people should no longer depend on markets for basic vegetables and spices such as pumpkin leaves, waterleaf, pepper and tomatoes.”
