Widows of Nigeria’s fallen Heros have called on the federal government to find a lasting solution to the incessant killings of their husbands, which they said have forced them into widowhood and incapable of taking care of their children.

One of the widows, Mrs Bethel Ekuma, who spoke to LEADERSHIP during this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration held at the Unity Square Abakaliki, described as unfortunate the killings of the fallen heroes by the same people they were expected to protect.

She maintained that since the death of her husband, she has been finding it difficult to give the children quality education and called on the federal and state governments to offer them employment and empowerment to reduce their suffering.

“I am glad that the sacrifices they rendered to the nation are not ignored. I really appreciate the government’s effort to always remember them.

Let me commend the organizers for honoring them. The fallen heroes put in a lot, but it’s so unfortunate that the same people they vowed to protect are the same people hunting them.

“Some of us that lost our husbands, today we are struggling to survive, we are being neglected, nobody remembers us after the burial of our husbands. Many can no longer send their children to school. Am a mother of two kids and it hasn’t been easy catering for them. It hasn’t been easy.

“Government should please intervene in our plight. They should employ us, we need to work. Many of the widows, their children have dropped out of school because of the demise of our husbands. I was in the university when my husband died and here I am, unable to cope with the current situation.”

At the event, legionnaires, the military, police and other security formations gathered at the Cenotaph Unity Square, Abakaliki, for the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day event.

The inspection of guards heralded the activities of the remembrance day by the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, who later signed the register and laid the wreath.

Nwifuru, who spoke on the significance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, underscores the importance of paying respect to the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect lives and properties. Ends.
