The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman from the detention camp of the state government’s security outfit code-named Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).

According to the spokesman of the state police command, superintendent of police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the woman whose name he withheld, was detained by the AVG operatives at their Okija detention camp in the Ihiala local government area of the state.

Ikenga who disclosed the sad development said that the AVG operatives arrested and detained the pregnant woman following an allegation of theft against her brought before the vigilante operatives by the woman’s husband.

The state police command image-maker said that the state commissioner of police, CP Nnaghe Itam, had, following the interception of a viral video about the detained pregnant woman, ordered a team of the command anti-crime operatives to launch an investigation into the incident and to rescue the housewife.

Ikenga said that CP Itam frowned at the act of detaining and inhuman treatment of suspects by some AVG members in the state.

Narrating the sad incident in a statement he issued to newsmen yesterday, Ikenga said, “The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained over a case of stealing by her husband in a Security Office at Okija.

“The report of the incident was intercepted in a trending video by the State Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam as he ordered rescue operations and an investigation into the report.

“Meanwhile, the CP frowns at such acts of indiscriminate detention and inhuman treatment of suspects by some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).

” He assured that the root cause of the incidents would be addressed to avert future occurrence.

He also initiated necessary moves with relevant authorities to checkmate the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the state”, the state police command’s image-maker stated further in the statement.
