In a move towards fostering collaboration between government agencies and the media, the national coordinator and CEO of AUDA-NEPAD, Jabiru Salisu Abdullahi, has called on media organisations to embrace a collaborative role in advancing Nigeria’s development agenda.

Abdullahi, who made this call during his maiden media parley in Abuja yesterday, emphasised the vital function that the press plays in governance and accountability, highlighting its potential as a “key partner in progress.”

He stated that the press is more than an observer; it is an active partner in progress, adding that the role of the media in shaping narratives, holding institutions accountable, and connecting citizens with governance cannot be overstated.

The AUDA-NEPAD boss expressed his intention to forge a closer relationship with the media. “Today, I extend my hand in partnership. AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria is committed to working with you to ensure that the transformative stories of our programs are told, that governance is transparent, and that citizens are informed and engaged,” he said.

He further reiterated AUDA-NEPAD’s alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda outlined by President Bola Tinubu, focusing on governance, empowerment, and inclusivity.

“This agenda emphasizes governance, empowerment, and inclusivity, echoing our belief that development must reach every corner of Nigeria to create a lasting impact,” he noted.

Abdullahi provided an overview of AUDA-NEPAD’s mission, which is centred around the African Union’s vision of a prosperous and integrated Africa.

He shared that the agency’s transformation from NEPAD to AUDA-NEPAD symbolises a renewed commitment to operational efficiency and measurable impact, thereby identifying several programmatic focuses.

“Good Governance and Transparency: Strengthening democracy through mechanisms like the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). Capacity Building: Utilizing the NEPAD Academy to equip professionals with essential skills for sustainable development.

“Empowerment Initiatives: Focusing on smallholder farmers, youth, and women to promote gender equality and leverage Africa’s demographic dividend. Regional Integration: Implementing projects that foster unity within the African community.

“This gathering marks the beginning of a shared journey to transform Nigeria and, by extension, Africa. AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria stands resolute in its mission to catalyse good governance, empower citizens, and foster sustainable development. But we cannot do this alone,” Abdullahi stated.

The CEO highlighted notable achievements of AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, including leading the country’s second peer review process, which he presented as a testament to their commitment to good governance and transparency.

He also declared that over 55 professionals have been empowered through the NEPAD Academy, gaining skills in governance, technology, and leadership.

“We are driving smallholder farmer programs that provide tools, resources, and knowledge to enhance productivity and secure food systems across Nigeria,” he said.

While recognising the challenges that still exist, Abdullahi expressed optimism for a better future.

“Despite these successes, we acknowledge that challenges remain; yet, we are undeterred. With strong partnerships, innovation, and commitment, we are turning these challenges into opportunities,” he stated.
