In response to the alarming rate of building and infrastructure collapses in the country, the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Abuja chapter, has launched an awareness campaign tagged: “Walk Against Building and Infrastructure Collapse”.

The initiative, part of a nationwide program organized by NICE National Headquarters, aims to educate the public on the importance of engaging professional civil engineers in construction projects.

Speaking at the campaign, the Chairman of the Abuja Chapter, Engr. Chichoke Anyabolu, highlighted the rising cases of structural failures in the previous years, attributing many of these incidents to the use of non-professionals in the construction industry.

“Most of these collapses result from substandard practices, including the engagement of unqualified individuals posing as engineers.

“To build right and build safe, we must prioritise patronising trained and certified professionals,” he explained

Engr. Anyabolu emphasised the importance of using quality materials, conducting thorough site investigations, and adhering to proper designs and supervision standards.

The campaign, which is being held simultaneously across various NICE chapters nationwide, seeks to drive home the message: Say No to Building Collapse. Build Right. Build Safe.

As part of its role, the Abuja Chapter of NICE places significant emphasis on training and professional development.

“Our primary responsibility is to train young engineers and ensure they grow into qualified professionals,” Anyabolu noted.

The chapter regularly holds technical sessions and workshops, many of which are free, to equip members with the skills needed to excel in their field.

He also commended recent government efforts to post engineering graduates to industries during their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, rather than schools, a move aimed at ensuring hands-on experience and professional growth.

Engr. Anyabolu concluded with a call for proper leadership in engineering institutions, emphasising that such organizations should be led by engineers who understand the industry’s challenges and solutions.

“With this campaign, the NICE Abuja Chapter hopes to not only reduce the incidence of building collapses but also inspire public confidence in the construction sector by championing professionalism and adherence to best practices,” he said.
